My father came home every evening and washed his hands for a long time. I was maybe seven when I asked him why. He never said a word.
My father spent decades running the research lab of one of the world's largest cigarette corporations. He knew what was inside those products. Not what it said on the pack. What would never be printed on any pack.
He never talked about it. But I understood. I have never touched a single cigarette in my life. The scale is devastating. The WHO estimates that more than 19,000 people worldwide die every day from the consequences of smoking. That number is the reason we act.
And I made myself a promise: If I ever get the chance to do something about it, I will.
For more than 20 years I have been developing innovations. For BMW, Volkswagen, Siemens, Deutsche Telekom. Over 700 projects. Over 50 startups.
And if I have learned one thing from all of it: the biggest breakthroughs never come from those who profit from the problem.
The solution to this problem will not come from those who caused it.
Pleasure does not have to come at a price. The choice between habit and abstinence is the wrong question. We are here to make something unnecessary.
